The Sanctity of Unborn Life

"Why does the Catholic Church oppose abortion in all circumstances?"

4 Scripture passages3 objections answered2 Church Father quotes

The Short Answer

Human life begins at conception, and direct abortion is always gravely immoral. Every human being, from the first moment of existence, has inherent dignity and the right to life. Scripture shows God knowing us in the womb (Psalm 139:13-16, Jeremiah 1:5).

Quick Overview

Every human life is precious from its very beginning. When a new human being is conceived, a unique person is created by God with an eternal soul. We must never directly kill an innocent person—and that includes the smallest and most vulnerable: the unborn. While we have great compassion for women in difficult situations, the solution is never to end an innocent life. The Church offers support through pregnancy centers, adoption services, and ministries for healing after abortion.

Biblical Evidence

What the Scriptures say

Psalm 139:13-16
"For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast protected me from my mother's womb... Thy eyes did see my imperfect being, and in thy book all shall be written."

Why This Matters

The Psalmist recognizes God's intimate involvement in creating human life in the womb—the unborn are known and loved by God.

Jeremiah 1:5
"Before I formed thee in the bowels of thy mother, I knew thee: and before thou camest forth out of the womb, I sanctified thee."

Why This Matters

God knows and sets apart the unborn for His purposes even before birth, affirming their personhood and value.

Luke 1:41-44
"And it came to pass, that when Elizabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the infant leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost... For behold as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy."

Why This Matters

John the Baptist, still in the womb, recognized the presence of Christ and leaped for joy—showing the spiritual awareness and personhood of the unborn.

Exodus 20:13
"Thou shalt not kill."

Why This Matters

The commandment against killing protects innocent human life, which begins at conception when a new human being with unique DNA comes into existence.

What the Church Teaches

Official Catholic doctrine

The Church teaches that 'Human life must be respected and protected absolutely from the moment of conception' (CCC 2270). Direct abortion is a grave moral evil (CCC 2271), and those who procure or assist in abortion incur automatic excommunication (Canon 1398).
