Was Mary Sinless? The Immaculate Conception
"How can Mary be sinless when the Bible says all have sinned?"
The Short Answer
The Immaculate Conception means Mary was preserved from original sin from the moment of her conception by a singular grace of God, in view of the merits of Jesus Christ. This does not mean Mary didn't need a Savior - rather, Christ saved her in a more sublime manner, by prevention rather than cure.
Quick Overview
Imagine if a doctor could prevent you from ever getting a disease versus curing you after you caught it. Both are acts of saving, but prevention is even better! God saved Mary in this special wayβHe prevented her from ever having original sin, rather than curing her of it later. She still needed Jesus to save her; He just did it in a unique and more wonderful way because she would become His mother.
Biblical Evidence
What the Scriptures say
"And the angel being come in, said unto her: Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women."
Why This Matters
The Greek 'kecharitomene' (full of grace) is a perfect passive participle indicating Mary was already completely graced before this moment. This unique title suggests a special, complete grace.
"I will put enmities between thee and the woman, and thy seed and her seed: she shall crush thy head, and thou shalt lie in wait for her heel."
Why This Matters
The 'woman' who is at complete enmity with the serpent prefigures Mary. Complete enmity with Satan implies complete freedom from sin.
"Because he hath regarded the humility of his handmaid: for behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. Because he that is mighty hath done great things to me."
Why This Matters
God did 'great things' to Mary. The Immaculate Conception is one of these great works of grace.
What the Church Teaches
Official Catholic doctrine
The dogma of the Immaculate Conception was defined by Pope Pius IX in 1854 (Ineffabilis Deus), though believed from antiquity. The Catechism teaches: 'From the first instant of her conception, she was totally preserved from the stain of original sin and she remained pure from all personal sin throughout her life' (CCC 508). This was accomplished by God's grace in view of Christ's merits: 'The most Blessed Virgin Mary was, from the first moment of her conception, by a singular grace and privilege of almighty God and by virtue of the merits of Jesus Christ, Savior of the human race, preserved immune from all stain of original sin' (CCC 491).
