Mary, Queen of Heaven

"Is Mary really a queen?"

3 Scripture passages2 objections answered2 Church Father quotes

The Short Answer

Mary is honored as Queen of Heaven because she is the Mother of Christ the King. In the Davidic kingdom, the queen was the king's mother, not his wife.

Quick Overview

In ancient Israel, the queen wasn't the king's wife—it was his mother. Solomon placed his mother Bathsheba on a throne at his right hand. Jesus is the true King of David's line, so Mary His mother is the true Queen. It's simple royal protocol.

Biblical Evidence

What the Scriptures say

1 Kings 2:19
"A throne was set for the king's mother, and she sat on his right hand."

Why This Matters

In the Davidic kingdom, the queen was the king's mother (the Gebirah). Solomon honored Bathsheba with a throne. Christ honors Mary.

Revelation 12:1
"A woman clothed with the sun... and on her head a crown of twelve stars."

Why This Matters

The woman representing Mary wears a crown of stars—royal imagery.

Luke 1:32
"The Lord God shall give unto him the throne of David his father."

Why This Matters

Jesus inherits David's throne. In David's line, the king's mother was the queen. Mary is queen mother.

What the Church Teaches

Official Catholic doctrine

Because Mary is the Mother of Christ the King, she shares in His royal dignity as Queen of Heaven and Earth (CCC 966). She is Queen because her Son is King.
