The Magisterium

"Who has authority to interpret the Bible?"

3 Scripture passages2 objections answered2 Church Father quotes

The Short Answer

The Magisterium is the teaching authority of the Church, exercised by the Pope and bishops in communion with him. It authentically interprets Scripture and Tradition.

Quick Overview

The Magisterium is like the Supreme Court for Christian teaching. When there's a dispute about what Scripture means or what Christians should believe, someone has to decide authoritatively. Christ gave that authority to Peter and the apostles, and their successors today.

Biblical Evidence

What the Scriptures say

Matthew 18:17-18
"If he will not hear the church, let him be to thee as the heathen... Whatsoever you shall bind upon earth, shall be bound also in heaven."

Why This Matters

The Church has binding authority. Its decisions carry heavenly weight.

1 Timothy 3:15
"The church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth."

Why This Matters

The Church—not the Bible alone—is called the pillar and foundation of truth.

Acts 15:28
"It hath seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us."

Why This Matters

The Council of Jerusalem made binding decisions with the Holy Spirit's guidance—the pattern for all Church councils.

What the Church Teaches

Official Catholic doctrine

The Magisterium is the servant of the Word of God. It teaches only what has been handed on and, by divine assistance, listens to it devoutly, guards it scrupulously, and explains it faithfully (CCC 86).
